The Bourbon Room: A Warm, Sophisticated Space Designed for Gathering

Some renovations completely change the way a home feels. The Bourbon Room in the Towne Interior Renovation project is one of those spaces.

What was once an existing office became a comfortable, moody retreat designed for relaxing, entertaining, and displaying a personal bourbon collection in a way that felt elevated without becoming overly formal.

From the beginning, the goal wasn’t to create a flashy bar area. The homeowners wanted a space that felt collected, welcoming, and personal — somewhere that could easily transition from a quiet evening at home to hosting friends for drinks and conversation.

Turning an Office Into a Destination

The transformation started with rethinking how the room would function. By enclosing part of the hallway wall and introducing built-in cabinetry, the room immediately began to feel more intentional and grounded.

The final design combines:

  • painted semi-custom cabinetry,
  • glass cabinet fronts,
  • quartz countertops,
  • layered lighting,
  • acoustic wood wall panels,
  • and wallpaper across the ceiling.

Each feature adds texture and warmth without overwhelming the space.

The result feels less like a traditional home bar and more like a small private lounge tucked inside the home.

Cabinetry Designed Around the Experience

The cabinetry became one of the biggest focal points in the room. Rather than using standard layouts, the design centered around display, lighting, and symmetry.

Glass-front cabinets allow the bourbon collection and glassware to become part of the design itself, while integrated lighting adds depth and warmth throughout the room.

The cabinetry also needed to accommodate several practical details behind the scenes:

  • hidden lighting components,
  • speaker cord access,
  • an ice chest,
  • electrical planning,
  • and decorative crown moulding.

One challenge during construction was balancing cabinet depth with access to the existing window shutters. The layout required careful adjustments to maintain both functionality and clean sight lines without compromising the overall design.

Those kinds of small decisions are often what make a space feel thoughtfully designed once everything comes together.

Lighting That Changes the Mood

Lighting played a huge role in the atmosphere of the Bourbon Room.

Instead of relying on one bright overhead fixture, the room uses several layers of dimmable lighting to create a softer glow throughout the space. Cabinet lighting, shelf lighting, decorative fixtures, and accent lighting all work together to make the room feel warm and relaxed in the evenings.

The homeowners specifically wanted every light to be dimmable — an important detail that completely changes the mood of the room depending on the time of day.

At night, the illuminated cabinetry and softer lighting give the room a comfortable lounge feel without feeling dark or heavy.

Adding Texture and Warmth

To help the room feel quieter and more intimate, acoustic wood panels were added as a major design feature.

The panels bring warmth and texture to the room, but they also help soften sound and reduce echo, which makes the space feel calmer and more comfortable during conversation or while listening to music.

Wallpaper on the ceiling added another layer of character. Rather than leaving the ceiling plain, the added texture helps the room feel more complete and visually connected from floor to ceiling.

Combined with the darker tones, layered lighting, and wood textures, the room feels cozy, refined, and lived-in.

The Details That Matter Most

One of the things that made this project successful was the amount of attention given to the smaller details.

Speaker wiring was carefully integrated into the cabinetry. Lighting color temperatures were coordinated throughout the room. Crown details were adjusted onsite to blend naturally into the existing architecture.

Even elements most people will never notice — like countertop seam placement and cabinet trim alignment — were considered throughout the installation process.

That level of planning is what helps a finished space feel natural instead of overly designed.

A Space Made for Everyday Living

What makes the Bourbon Room stand out is that it feels personal.

It’s sophisticated without feeling formal. Designed without feeling staged.

It’s a room built for:

  • sharing a drink with friends,
  • listening to music,
  • unwinding after a long day,
  • or simply enjoying a quieter corner of the home.

The final result reflects the homeowners’ style while bringing together comfort, atmosphere, and craftsmanship in a way that feels timeless and easy to live in.

At BEC Innovations, projects like this are always about more than finishes or fixtures. They’re about creating spaces that feel good to live in every single day.

And the Bourbon Room does exactly that.
