How to Check Contractor Reviews—And What They Really Mean

by | Jun 16, 2025

Choosing the right contractor means reading between the stars.

When you’re hiring someone to work on your home—whether it’s a kitchen renovation, a bathroom upgrade, or a full addition—checking reviews is a no-brainer. But not all reviews are created equal. Here’s how to read them the smart way:

1. Start with Google
This is usually the most reliable place to look. Google reviews are harder to fake than those on less-regulated platforms, and they’re easy to sort by most recent or most relevant.

Look for:
A solid number of reviews (more than just friends and family)
Responses from the business (a good sign of communication and professionalism)
Consistency in tone—are people regularly raving about the same things?

2. Look for Detail, Not Just Stars
A five-star review that says “great job!” is nice—but not all that helpful. Pay more attention to reviews that talk about:
Communication and timelines
How the team handled problems
Cleanliness, professionalism, and jobsite behavior
Whether the project came in on budget

3. Read the Bad Reviews Too
One or two lower-star reviews aren’t necessarily red flags—how the company responds matters more. A thoughtful, respectful reply that owns a mistake or clarifies the situation can be a sign of a company that takes accountability seriously.

4. Check for Trends
No contractor is perfect, but if you see the same complaints popping up again and again—like ghosting, missed deadlines, or billing confusion—believe the pattern.

5. Ask Around
Online reviews are important, but don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. Ask your neighbors, coworkers, or local Facebook groups for who they’ve used and what the experience was like.

At BEC Innovations, we take reviews seriously. They’re not just testimonials—they’re tools we use to get better. Our team reads every single one (really!), and we’re proud of our reputation for professionalism, communication, and getting the job done right.

A Kitchen Renovation That Solved the Right Problems

Sometimes a kitchen doesn't need to be torn out. It just needs the few things that are actually wrong with it fixed properly. That was the case here — the homeowners had been weighing a full renovation, but the layout worked, the cabinets worked, and the appliances...
