This kitchen had served the family well for decades — but it had been done by the homeowners themselves a generation ago, and it was starting to show. The cabinetry was dark, the layout was closed off from the rest of the home, and the natural light that should have been pouring in from the backyard was getting stopped at the walls. The homeowners came to BEC Innovations ready for a real change. Here’s how we got there.
Opening the Kitchen to the Rest of the Home

The original kitchen sat walled off from the dining and living rooms. We opened the room up so the kitchen now flows into both spaces — the family can talk to anyone in the next room while cooking.
Letting the Light In
We opened up the stairwell to allow daylight from the exterior wall into the kitchen, and added large picture windows to bring more natural light into the room.
A Large Island for the Whole Family
The homeowners wanted an island their college-aged kids could sit at without being in the way of whoever was cooking. We built it generously sized, with seating that gives the kids their hangout spot.
Drawers Over Doors
The homeowner’s clearest preference was drawers over cabinet doors. We built the new cabinetry around that, with drawers throughout — easier access and a cleaner look.
Updating the Kitchen
Most of the appliances were in good condition and stayed, but we upgraded the stove to match the way the family actually cooks. Everything else was rebuilt around what the kitchen needed to do better.
