This was one of those projects that just made sense.
The clients had a backyard patio, but they weren’t using it much — mostly because it was uncovered. Between the heat, the sun, and the general lack of comfort, it just wasn’t a place they wanted to spend time. Grilling was uncomfortable. Sitting out there wasn’t relaxing. It only got used for a few months a year, and even then, not often.
They didn’t want anything over-the-top — just something clean and simple that matched the house and felt like it belonged. The goal was to make the space actually usable, while keeping the design in line with the rest of the home.
What We Built
We added a porch roof over the existing patio, tied everything in to match, and gave the space a big upgrade in terms of both function and comfort.
We hit a small snag early on (an unexpected foundation overpour from the original build) but we worked around it and got a solid pier in for the new porch columns. Our mason found brick that matched the existing home (which is always a win), and the new siding looks sharp next to it. Bonus: it won’t ever rot.
Inside the ceiling, we went with tongue-and-groove paneling, stained in a custom color that pulls in the brick tones really nicely. We also installed a large ceiling fan to help with airflow and keep the space comfortable most of the year.
The columns are wrapped in PVC for durability, so there’s nothing the clients need to worry about down the line.
The End Result
Now? They’re using the porch all the time. Grilling is a lot more enjoyable, and they’ve told us it’s become their favorite place for a quiet nap or to just relax outside now that the weather’s cooling off.
The best compliment we got: “It looks like it was always supposed to be here.” That’s exactly what we were going for.
